OBITUARY
n[/if 73]n
Bernice Volaski, a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, advocate, artist, and lifelong learner, passed away after a long life centered on family, education, culture, and service.
The daughter of Jewish immigrants, Esther and Hyman Wishnoff, with siblings Stanley and Ruth, Bernice grew up with a deep appreciation for perseverance, tradition, and education. While raising her family, she earned an associate degree from Rockland Community College in 1969 and a bachelor’s degree from Dominican College in 1974.
Much of Bernice’s life’s work was inspired by her oldest daughter, Sharon, who had severe intellectual disabilities. Bernice became a dedicated advocate for children and adults with developmental disabilities, serving in numerous leadership roles at the local, county, and state levels. She worked closely with organizations associated with Letchworth Village, NY, served on boards and committees, advocated with lawmakers in Albany, and helped establish programs for individuals with special needs. Her service earned her a Distinguished Service Award from the Rockland County Legislature, and she was listed in Who’s Who in the East.
Bernice was also known for her intelligence, elegance, and love of the arts. She was an avid reader, painter, pianist, and theater enthusiast who encouraged those same interests in her children and grandchildren. Jewish traditions and family gatherings were deeply important to her, and she took great pride in bringing her family together for holidays and special occasions.
Bernice was the cherished wife to Herman, beloved mother of Sharon, Valerie, Elliott, and Barry. She was a cherished mother-in-law to Rose and Vera, and a devoted grandmother to Lindsay (Sean), Jeff (Sierra), Harrison (Yudit), Eric, and Phillip and great-grandmother to Emerson, Hudson, Cora, Ella, Anders, and Yarden. Her family was central to her life, and she took great pride in each generation that followed her.
She will be deeply missed by her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and the extended family and friends whose lives she touched.
