Sandra (Sandie) Lee Ziegler
February 10, 1945 – June 4, 2024
Sandra (Sandie) Lee Fleischman was born in Cincinnati and moved with her family to Canarsie, Brooklyn, as a child. They later relocated to Long Island, where she spent her youth, developed her passion for communication, and discovered her first love.

Sandie married Jerome (Jerry) Ziegler in 1965. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother, aunt, sister, friend, coach, pack leader, den mother, salesperson, serial entrepreneur, and lifelong Mets fan. Known as the neighborhood mom, Sandie coordinated activities to keep her sons David, Daniel, Douglas, and their many friends engaged and learning. She was a Cub Scout den mother, teaching young boys the art of taffy pulling and making chocolate or pasta. Sandie thrived in retail, exploring adventures with her children such as picking 300 lbs of tomatoes or peaches for canning. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident in the many businesses she built with passion and creativity.

Her marriage to Jerry was cut short by his untimely passing at 44 years old. Sandie loved Jerry with all her heart. Losing her husband at 40 with three teenagers to raise was a devastating event that shaped the rest of her life. She endured the pain and survived for her boys.

Years after Jerry’s passing, Sandie was blessed to find love again with Michael Strockbine, her life partner for the past 34 years. Michael was her faithful companion, entrepreneurial partner, Rummikub and gin rummy adversary, and fellow Mets fan. He was the most loyal, loving, and dedicated caretaker as Sandie suffered a stroke and battled medical challenges in recent years. Michael was her rock, and they were a perfect match.

Sandie cherished her family, pets, the feeling of home, endless projects, baking and cooking, entertaining, and her amazing grandchildren: Sarah, Jeremy, Matilda, Max, Lucious, and Jamie.

Sandie is survived by her three sons, David (Edye Leuin), Daniel (Fabienne), and Douglas (Abbai) Ziegler; her grandchildren; nieces; friends; and her life partner, Michael Strockbine.

What an amazing woman. Strength beyond belief to the point that she sometimes intimidated me as a child. I watched her raise her three boys with more love than I had ever witnessed before. She was more of a mother to me than my own. I treasured every single moment I got to spend with her, especially in her kitchen; one of the warmest rooms with a sense of family and support. She was the fiery red head who towered over you and then grabbed you into a hug where you practically were enveloped in all that love.

Jason, I’d write one of my own for Sandie but you nailed it. Every single word you said I shared. She was Intimidating, loving, warm, fun, motherly. She loved all us kids and gave us a safe place to be stupid teenagers. She was a legend.

The loss of Sandie leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew her. She brought laughter, warmth and love to every room that she entered- as well as great food and great advice! She will be dearly missed.

My condolences to Mike and to Sandie’s sons and their families. While these last few years have been difficult, Sandie is now at rest. As you all begin a new chapter of your lives, without her, remember she loved and was loved. She now resides in your heart.
