OBITUARY
Rebecca Hirsch Murphy of Boston,
Massachusetts, passed away at home with
family on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
Rebecca was born to William and Elizabeth
Hirsch in Brooklyn, New York. She attended
P.S. 197 and James Madison High School and
developed friendships that would last her
lifetime.
After graduating high school, she attended
University of Bridgeport and then transferred to
University of Wisconsin, where she graduated.
She then attended Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
where she graduated with a Master in Social Work and became a
Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
She then moved to Winchester, Massachusetts where she raised two sons, David and Andrew.
She attended many sports games and was always happy to host team dinners.
When her sons were in junior high and high school, Rebecca began what would become a 35
year career as a clinical social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital, during which time
she helped countless numbers of patients and families through the needs of dealing with illness
and tragedy. Over these years, Rebecca became part of an extraordinary community of social
workers. She bonded with her colleagues over the shared mission of caring for others, and grew
magnificent friendships over discussions about family and life outside of work. When Rebecca
herself became ill, these friends were physically and emotionally at her side
Rebecca’s greatest joy were children, David and Andrew, their spouses, Catherine and Laura,
and in recent years, her grandchildren, Emma, Daniel, Joshua and Maeve. She spoke with
family almost daily, visited her grandchildren regularly, and gave generously of her love.

Dear David, Andrew, and Family,
I am so sorry about the passing of your Mom. She was always so kind not only to me but to all those in Winchester, Boston, and MGH. I am grateful she asked me to be your babysitter so many decades ago which are very special memories for me. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
With deepest sympathy,
Alicia
