I am so saddened to hear the news of Phil’s passing. Phil was a class act and I was beyond lucky to have taught in not one, but two of his schools! Phil and I met when he hired me to teach first grade in his school. P.S 197 in Brooklyn. I loved working for someone who was kind caring, and knowledgeable. He inspired me to continue to grow as a teacher and better myself each year. After a year ,I was again lucky to have been hired in Seaford…reunited with Phil! From there my career blossomed under Phil’s guidance. As a teacher I knew I could count on Phil to support me when dealing with students and parents. I was honored to have spoken about Phil at his retirement party from Seaford and I am honored now to share my memories if working for him. I wish Gloria and his boys strength during this difficult time. I am confident in stating that I never have nor will I ever again teach for such an amazing person. Rest in peace Phil.

Dear Gloria and family,
On behalf of all of us who had the privilege of working with Phil at 197 I want to extend our utmost condolences. When Phil became the principal of 197, he poured new life into our school, and elevated our reputation as an exceptional elementary school. I will always cherish our conversations and the way he treated the staff with respect. I live in Florida now, so unfortunately I won’t be able to pay my respects in person. We’re all so sorry for your loss. Maddy Modlin

Phil was a wonderful mentor and friend to me. He was a man who exemplified intelligence, integrity and dedication on a daily basis. He also taught me the importance of balancing work and family responsibilities. I will miss you and always remember the wisdom and kindness that you shared with me.
