OBITUARY
Dr. Mark I. Pitman
New York, NY — Dr. Mark I. Pitman, 94 years old, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at his home in New York City, New York; he was surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Pitman was born on March 2, 1932 to Louis and Mildred Pitman. A graduate of the University of Vermont and UVM’s Robert Larner College of Medicine, Dr. Pitman created and led the Division of Sports Medicine as its founding Chief, at the Hospital for Joint Diseases (now NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital).
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Paulette, and their devoted children, Nancy (Pitman) Rosenberg and son-in-law Adam, and Michael Pitman and daughter-in-law Julie. He was predeceased by his son of loving memory, Bruce Pitman. Dr. Pitman was also blessed with five grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan, Bella, Jacob and Lola. Known as “Papa” to his grandchildren, Dr. Pitman was loving, kind, humble, smart, quiet, determined and creative. He enjoyed bike rides, pottery and travelling the world with Paulette and the rest of his family.
