A graduate of Harvard Law School, Harvey practiced law for more than 50 years and served as a family court judge. He earned recognition for outstanding service as President of the Student Council for the School of Commerce at NYU in 1952, where he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree.
Harvey took pride in staying in shape and jogging daily, leading a healthy life for his 96 years. As a young man, he enjoyed being a lifeguard and teaching water skiing in the Catskills. He even water skied around the island of Manhattan in the middle of winter. He spent his later years in Charlotte with his wife of 25 years, Michelle ‘Shellie’ Rindner of blessed memory. He loved taking long morning walks with Shellie, playing golf and tennis, and spending time with friends.
Harvey was proud to be an active member of Temple Israel as a regular at Thursday morning minyan, The Levine JCC, and a reading tutor to elementary school students. Harvey started a Thursday Lunch Bunch discussion group and enjoyed facilitating conversations on a wide breadth of subject matters. He was fortunate to later find love and companionship with Georgia Jacobs, who meant so much to him and cared for him so lovingly.
He is survived by his sons, Andrew and Kenny; daughters-in-law, Debbi and Aryn; and grandchildren Logan (Rebecca), Eli, Milo (Sean), Solomon, Deva, and Jesse, and great-granddaughter Ellie. Harvey is also survived by his first wife Beatrice Ball Barer. He is preceded in death by his parents Adolf and Sophie Barer, and sister Lillian Beck (Bernard).
