OBITUARY
Florence Rapaport, aged 93, died peacefully after a
long illness on May 28, 2026. She was preceded in
death by her husband David.
A lifelong New Yorker, Florence grew up in Forest Hills,
NY. She spent nearly every weekend of her childhood
between her grandparents boarding house in Coney
Island and subway rides uptown with her father to
Yankee Stadium. The cast of characters who lived at
the house in Coney Island provided experiences, that
for a young girl, left an indelible mark. For the rest of her
life, Florence spoke lovingly of that time and stories
from her Coney Island adventures remained a staple
feature of every holiday gathering.
As a young woman, Florence attended Ohio University
where she met her future husband of 67 years, David
Rapaport. They married soon after college, moving first
to Virginia where he served in the army and then Long
Island, NY where they the raised four children she now
leaves behind, Larry, Debra, Janet and Gail.
Family was central to Florence’s life and she took
enormous pleasure in watching her four children thrive
and begin families of their own. She adored her eight
grandchildren, Chloe, Jeremy, Kolya, Amber, Anna,
Evan, Christopher and Julia, and was a great
grandmother to Jack and Max. She was also close to
numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and enjoyed
spending time with her active group of friends that only
seemed to grow larger as she got older.
Next to her family and friends, Florence could be found
regularly taking part in New York’s vibrant cultural life.
She was passionate about the arts and spent numerous
nights and weekends seeing Broadway plays, concerts
at Lincoln Center, evenings at the Metropolitan Opera
and dance at The American Ballet Theater. Florence
never lost her love of learning and often attended
lectures, museum tours, and classes at GW Post
College.
Her most enduring and obvious quality, was her natural
kindness and generosity. No matter what the need, or
where her children were located, she always made
herself available to help. To her close circle of friends,
they knew she was someone they could share
confidences and routinely count on for advice. Florence
exuded a quiet charisma, paired with a subtle and
smart sense of humor, that lit a spark in everyone who
had the privilege of knowing her.
Services will be held Sunday, June 7,2026, 10 a.m. at
the Star of David Memorial Chapel, 1236 Wellwood Ave,
West Babylon, N.Y.. Following the service, the family will
host a reception at the Garden City Hotel, 45 7th Street,
Garden City N.Y.. All are welcome.

Florence was a gentle and soft-spoken soul who exuded warmth and nurturing. She was such a generous host and New Years Eve ALWAYS comes with memories of Janet and me having the Rapaport house to ourselves to enjoy all the special hors d’oevres Florence would provide us while the parents went out. The most special treats with the little chocolate cups to pretend to drink cocktails out of. I hope all these friends who spent so many years together are now back together in heaven!
